McDorman graduated from Richardson High School in Texas, along with attending Westwood Junior High and Northwood Hills Elementary. He holds a passion for acting and developed it throughout his school life.

Early Career and Breakthrough Roles

In 2003, Jake McDorman had his initial television acting jobs. His work did not take a lot of time to starappreciate,  as he landed the Fox sitcom Quintuplets in 2004-2005 with Parker Chase. His early career had guest appearances in various popular TV shows, including House, CSI: Miami, and Cold Case.

His first film appearance was in the 2005 thriller Echoes of Innocence, where he gained a few supporting roles in movies like Aquamarine (2006), Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006), and Live Free or Die Hard (2007). He indeed snagged the role as Evan Chambers in the ABC Family comedy-drama Greek from 2007 to 2011 as an accomplished young actor. Greek ran for four seasons and 70 episodes, making McDorman’s character one of the fan favorites, and it granted Greek a lot of fan cult during its time on the air.

Break-through Success: American Sniper and Limitless

An important step forward into mainstream stardom was achieved for Jake McDorman in 2014 when the young actor gave a great performance in Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper War drama. Under the helm of Clint Eastwood, this film further stars Bradley Cooper in the difficult role of Chris Kyle and Jamie Bell as Chris’ friend and fellow Navy SEAL, Ryan “Biggles.” This commercially successful and critically acclaimed film helped express the depth of a talented actor who has an ability to perform, among other things, tumultuous roles.

After American Sniper, McDorman acted as the protagonist of the CBS television show Limitless (2015-2016), which was loosely based on the 2011 film starring Bradley Cooper. In this series, McDorman played Brian Finch, a man who stumbled upon an enigmatic drug named NZT that makes his intellect and cognitive abilities exceptional. The series followed on from the story of the original film, weaving science fiction and procedural drama into one another, and McDorman’s performance gained much reputation for its charisma and wit. Sadly, although incredibly popular, Limitless was cancelled after just one season, leaving the audience hungry for more.

Versatility Across Television and Film

He has repeatedly demonstrated his versatility, easily sliding between genres and mediums. In 2012, McDorman took the lead in NBC’s sitcom Are You There, Chelsea?, a comedy based on Chelsea Handler’s memoir. That stint was short lived, but the comedic timing was definite.

McDorman was later introduced as Mike Pratt, the employer and romantic interest of Fiona Gallagher, in Showtime’s Shameless. His role enriched the ensemble cast of this long-running dramedy. He also featured in the ABC romantic comedy series Manhattan Love Story (2014) with Analeigh Tipton to stamp his mark on romantic comedies as well.

His professional development kept coming upward, and he landed considerable roles in extremely acclaimed productions like Lady Bird (2017), where he played Mr. Bruno, and HBO’s Watchmen (2019) under the character Nelson Gardner, known as Captain Metropolis, in the episode “This Extraordinary Being.” McDorman’s work in Watchmen received accolades for layering depth and dimension, and the episode stands as one of the most critically acclaimed episodes of the series.

Recent Work and Notable Projects

Jake McDorman continued to solidify his standing as an excellent and in-demand actor in films and television shows over the past few years. In 2020, he portrayed Alan Shepard, one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts for NASA, in the Disney+ historical drama The Right Stuff. McDorman was true to Shepard’s bluster and fragility in portraying this legendary astronaut from a storied space race story.

His latest works are Mrs. Davis, 2023, in which he appears as Wiley in a Peacock original sci-fi comedy drama by Damon Lindelof of Watchmen. It is his new collaboration with the great creator Lindelof and a line of consecutive collaborations with prominent players in the industry.
